Shea butter is fat that’s extracted from the nuts of the shea tree. It’s solid at warm temperatures and has an off-white or ivory color. Shea trees are native to West Africa, and most shea butter still comes from that region.
Shea butter has been used as a cosmetic ingredient for centuries. Its high concentration of vitamins and fatty acids — combined with its easy-to-spread consistency — make it a great product for smoothing, soothing, and conditioning your skin.Shea Butter is a plant-based emollient that mimics the lipid content of the skin. It acts as a good skin conditioning agent and is used on dry and dehydrated skin and deep wrinkles, promoting a soft, smooth, healthy skin appearance High concentrations of fatty acid compounds
Shea butter has high concentrations of fatty acids with fatty acid composition dominated by stearic (28-56%) and oleic (34-61%) acids1.
High concentration of E Vitamins
Shea butter has high concentrations of E vitamins, the skins natural antixodants2. Alpha-tocopherol, the most important skin vitamin, comprised 64% of total tocopherol content2. Vitamin E is the main lipophilic antioxidant for our skin and is very important for the protection of our skin from attack by UV radiation-induced free radicals.
High concentration of antioxidant phenolic and flavonoid constituents
Another study revealed that Shea butter has high concentrations of plant polyphenols3. It was found in another study that Argan oil is rich in catechine compounds, Gallic acid, quercetin, and cinnamic acid which are strong natural anti-oxidant compounds. Gallic acid was the major phenolic compound, comprising an average of 27% of the measured total phenols and exceeding 70% in some populations3. These are strong anti-oxidants which could serve to protect the skin against UV radiation-induced free radical attack.
